Baba Baffour, Many years ago you taught me to see the SAT or other “standardized” test preparation as preparation for serving Europeans under the guise of assessing our knowledge, aptitude, potential, intelligence, etc. I remember your phrasing was something like: “Of the ____ number of things white people know and care about, how many do you know and care about?” You added that to really assess the student’s knowledge, potential, etc., you would have to ask: “What does the student know and care about?” This has guided AYA’s approach to SAT/Praxis, etc. preparation and coaching. In preparation for an expanded SAT course, we’ve decided to prepare students to pass an “ASAT”: African Student Achievement Test where they are taught and tested on how much they know and care about those things that would prepare them them to serve the African community. In our one-on-one coaching experience this ASAT preparation has affirmed the students' a sense of identity, mission and purpose and has increased their motivation. This translates into better performance on SAT testing without alienation from their African-selves and African people. Given the prevalence of vocabulary to SAT assessment, we began to think of vocabulary for the ASAT. Baba Fu Kiau’s image and voice came to me: “Wooorrrds. Words can heal and they can kill..." I imagined myself asking: "Baba, what are the 10 most important words that our people need to know to be of service to African people?" I envisioned thousands of people hearing the power and wisdom of his voice as he shared this sacred wisdom. I then saw you, Mama Marimba, Mama Adelaide, Wade Nobles and younger voices telling us via Mu Kanda the 10 most important words each month of the year. Hence: “120 words.” Over time we’ll develop a powerful vocabulary. Process: After the formal presentation, attendants will be able to ask questions of you and other presenters and interact in their own voice. After the question and answer session, attendants will be invited to go into moderated small group discussion "rooms" for an additional hour. Imaging meeting people from around the country in a such a small group discussion. True to your guidance, Baba, we ask participants to answer the "10 most important words" question themselves. We provide them a password to post their answers with that of other registrants; so that others from around the country who will attend the lecture/discussion can see them before the monthly seminar and include them in the online small group break-out discussions that will follow the presentations. Albarka! (many thanks), Baba for your instruction and inspiration. Wekesa O. Madzimoyo
