Inspired by Prof. B
and Dr. Shabazz, Parents as Master Math Imagine math being a joyous experience for you and your See your children earn hugs from "Grandma" as well as "A's in school because they've gained family knowledge, closeness, confidence and respect at the same time that you were teaching them math concepts and skills. Feel the pride that comes from your knowing that your child has mastered mathematics two grade levels ahead of her/his peers; even learning algebra before the 6th grade. Now, hear yourself talking to his "school" teachers when you have rescued and taught them? Hear the toe-to-toe confidence in your voice. Notice the respect you've earned because you've succeeded as an educator regardless of your degree or "formal" educational level. The revolution is here! More and more parents are taking on the responsibility to educate their children. I’m not just talking about those who are home schooling. Parents of public and private school students stay up late and work weekends, helping their children finish reports, figure out problems and helping them type papers or glue paper cutouts on Office Depot poster boards. Problem is: these parents have received little help or support. Problem is: they’ve taken a back seat to their child’s "school" teachers even when they know the education their children are receiving is not working. That’s about to change. It has to change. Consider that even in affluent Atlanta suburbs, 50% of Black students are failing math, regardless of income. We estimate that 80% of the "passing" students are just getting "through" it. Too many educators blame our children. "Non-caring parents" is a constant excuse they give for their failure to successfully teach. Some blame the neighborhood, the way we talk, too much paper work. Others even hint at an "inherent racial inferiority" or "inability to handle abstract thinking." But their blaming is an integral part of their irresponsibility!
Dr. Abdulalim Shabazz ( www.sankofamath.net) teaches us that math is reasoning, critical thinking, and common sense. In fact, he says: "They’ve taken the easiest subject in the curriculum and made it the hardest."Each One Teach One: we make it easy again. We teach parents to be master math educators for their children in grades 1-7 through Algebra. So, you weren’t a math wiz in school? Say you start to sweat just thinking about fractions, decimals, percents, or maybe it was that dreaded number line or Algebra? No matter, Sankofa Math has helped parents go back to heal the disconnects and fetch the math knowledge that became fuzzy or that they just didn’t get. More than that, Our Each One Teach One program shows you how to joyously impart your new or renewed math knowledge and confidence to your children. Not only do we show you how to teach them fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, proportions, Algebra, etc., we show you how to explain the deeper meanings of these concepts. We show you how to use them on a daily basis to solve the problems of our lives and how to apply them to help solve the problems of our people and the world, in that order. Minimum 2-Grade level improvement We offer 3 semesters of instruction. You and your child will grow in confidence, knowledge and skill after each semester. We guarantee a two-grade level improvement for all families who complete all 3 semesters. There is a 50-family limit for this program. We're working out the details now. |
