The Problem:

The statistics are so common; they don’t shock us anymore. When the Six O’clock News screams of the abject poverty, crime, drugs, self degradation and hopelessness drowning millions of poor Black families and children, we turn down the volume until it’s barely a whisper.

This is understandable - the situation is dire; the problems entrenched, and it all seems overwhelming to most of us.

Fortunately, there are some men and women who have heard the whispers and the screams. They’ve been specially prepared to listen, and more importantly - to help. These unlikely heroes and heroines are Black millionaires -- self-made millionaires who raised themselves up from the same dire situations of poverty, crime, drugs, absent fathers and mothers that grip too many of our community today. Indeed, this is why they can hear screams for help, even when they’re masked by bravado or apathy.

Unlike some who have inherited their wealth and/or use their wealth to shield them from the still harsh realities of being poor and Black in America, these Black millionaires see the problems clearly and seek to address them directly. The odds of their moving from rags-to-riches were a million-to-one. They beat the odds!

Now, they want to lessen those odds for others who live in our poor communities. While each has helped hundreds to become financially independent and successful, the screams challenge them to expand their reach to affect the lives of thousands at a time.
