How to we teach STEM to HEAL cultral alienation?
From phones to drones, to robotics; AI is everywhere. More today than ever, science, technology, engineering, and math courses are critical for understanding, navigating, and taking charge of our world. The problem is that current science curricula and methodology alienate our students – either from the STEM subject areas or from our people, culture and historic missions. Of course, neither is desirable. Fortunately, AYA has created a model to show how to do it differently – how to teach biology and chemistry while healing cultural alienation. This time, we use Melanin. When you learn the principles and techniques, you can adapt it to other areas as well. We have used snippets from our Black Body Bio-Khem classes to engage adults and youth at each stop on the Afrikan Centered Sovereignty Education tour. Now, it’s time to take it to another level. It’s time for the Melanin Mastery Cohorts (MMC). Sign up right away. These will be groups of 6-12 from your local area who want to know more about melanin and want clarity on how we can use it to stimulate science (biology & chemistry) learning, retention, and excitement. Each cohort will have students in the group along with community members, parents, teachers, and a science enthusiast. Twice a month (2nd and 4th) the MMC will attend the Thursday 7-9 pm (Eastern Time) MMC online class taught by Baba Wekesa (or his designee). Once per week, the local MMC will meet to research, learn, share and discuss their chosen and assigned areas of melanin research (online or face-2-face). “Each One Teach One” will be the guiding philosophy for each group. September, October, November are the months for research, learning, and preparing. December is the month that all cohorts around the country will make presentations to their communities on the biology and chemistry of melanin. It all begins with your signing up for the MMC class using the link below. Then you’ll be assigned a facilitator who will help in the formation of a functioning local MMC. We have a lot to do in August to be ready for a powerful start in September. Let’s get going now. Click here to make a one-time payment and here to pay in installments.

AYA School-Community Cohort
Family, AYA Educational Institute needs your help with a school-community STEM project that we call Melanin Mastery! We are forming local MM Cohorts (MMCs) around the country. It will be challeging. It will be a 3 month journey backwards and forward into sometimes uncharted territory and still you may choose to join us. If you are a parent, grand parent, guardian of a middle or high school Afrikan-American student, we need you. If you are an Afrikan or Afrikan American interested in learning and sharing about melanin, we need you. Lastly, if you are a science teacher or science enthusiast interested in learning and sharing about melanin, then we need you. MMC Details: Each cohort will consist of each of middle or high school students, parents, guardians, community persons, teachers, or science enthusiats. Each cohort will conduct itself according to AYA’s WHB’s tool set and guidelines. Your mission, should you decide to accept it will be: 1. Join or help form a local 6-12 person cohort who will attend 2 AYA online classes per month for a total of 6 classes and who will meet locally with your cohort once per week. Each cohort will be assigned an AYA support person. Each cohort will be given access to AYA online classroom space to facilitate research, and cohort communication. 2. Meet weekly to research, discuss and share with each other your discoveries about the biology and khemestry of melanin. This research will be based on the cohorts approved or assigned areas of melanin study. There are many social media claims about melanin. Some sound too good to be true. Are they? Each cohort also research approved assigned or chosen popular social media claims about melanin to support or disprove the claims with evidence - biological and khemical evidence. MMC’s will debate, discuss, teach each other. Everyone in the cohort should know what everyone knows regardless of age barriers and - even if there is disagreement. 3. Prepare for your cohort's group and individual community presentations in December 2019. Panel: Before an audience of 50 to 100 people in your local area, MMC members will present what you have learned about the biology and khemistry of melanin and yourselves. This cohort will also field questions from the audience. Individual: The second presentation will feature individual MMC members presenting what they have learned to their peers.

In our high school course - Black Body BioKhem we use Melanin (primarily) to introduce and - in some cases deepen - students' biology and khemistry studies. The Melanin Mastery Cohorts (MMC’s ) will focus on a subset of that course. We seek to accomplish a number of things: 1. Create a portal to the sciences (especially Biology and Khemistry) to replace the blocks that are created by the typical public and private school science instruction. 2. Establish in participant’s minds and experience that science is for the service of our people (Afrikan) people first and the world after that. 3. To demonstrate how academic attention, retention, and research is increased for adults and youth when we engage the subject matter as a vehicle of healing from the wounds of oppression, and as a tool for challenging oppression 4. To develop a serious multi-generational learning space so that participants get to experience the community and relationships as "school." 5. To help Afrikan parents and communities regain faith in our ability to educate our own children.
